BIOMAGNETICS   THERAPY

Thank you for joining us on Health Chat!

An ever increasing field of endeavor involving both research and use is that of Magnetic Therapy.   I remember several years ago when my wife Chris and I went to Indianapolis to our first Biomagnetic seminar.  We came home a little skeptical and a little uneasy as to how we would start using magnets on our patients without them thinking we were "wacko".  I remember also one of the first patients we taped a magnet to, for a lumbar disc bulge, that for all intensive purposes was 80% better but for some reason was stuck at that point of recovery and did not seem to get any better.  We were treating her about every two weeks and after taping a round 1200 gauss magnet over the right L5/S1 interspace this patient never returned.   It was 6 months before we saw her again and I was sure we had "spooked" her and she was glad to get out of our office and was not about to return.

I recall walking into the room that day on her return visit and saying, "Well ..... we have not seen you for some time ....... what happened to you?"    I was really apprehensive as to what her answer would be but I was soon to be elated!   She said, "Don't you remember you put a magnet on my back and after that I had no more back pain."   She continued, "After two or three weeks I took the magnet off and whenever I got some pain I put it back on and the pain would go away.  Something happened this time when the pain came back the magnet did not take it away so I thought I had better come back and get a treatment."   WOW!  Magnetic Therapy really works!  By then we had witnessed many results from, that which was somewhat helpful to that which was almost like a miracle.  Since that time, several years ago, we have found the use of magnets for muscle spasms, disc bulges and herniations, organ imbalances especially underactivity, to be an everyday occurrence.

What we used to hold the magnet to the body was a special herbal analgesic tape we buy from the Chinese out of California.  It rarely had any allergic reaction and only on occasion showed some skin irritation.  We used the analgesic "patches" for their intended purpose also and that was to provide an analgesic effect to irritated and inflamed muscle and myofascial tissue but they held so well without coming off that we found them to be the best method for holding the magnets on.    This tape would be shower-proof for up to two weeks and in one instance a fellow returned with the tape and magnet still on after one month.  It looked a little "ratty" but it was indeed still sticking!  It is our intention to include these analgesic patches as a "for sale" item on our website along with a very unique analgesic salve, called Skinners, that is also great for sinus, head and chest colds and sore throats.  We just need a little time so we can get these items added, but it will be well worth the wait for the consumer.

Albert Davis and Walter Rawls wrote several books, two of which are entitled, "The Magnetic Effect" and "Magnetism And Its Effect On The Living System".  These books have been around for awhile, their content having more to do with the effects of the positive and negative pole and the treatment of various body areas.  We will talk about some of this in a moment but recently I am most impressed with the current excitement and media coverage of the use of magnets by  doctors, athletes and entertainers.  From an article out of Let's Live Magazine, March 1993, entitled, "Medical Magnetism -- A Healing force Coming Of Age", was a reference made about the Pain and Stress Therapy Center in San Antonio, in which pain specialist Kathy Birkner, CRNA, Ph.D., successfully used magnets therapeutically for nearly eight years in such cases as muscle trigger points and pulls, general aches, sprains and pains, athletic injuries, bursitis, tendonitis and lower back strains.  Says Birkner, "The fascinating thing about the magnets is that patients often report feeling warmth and reduced pain within minutes, the effect of increased local circulation created by the magnets."  I have other newspaper articles entitled, "Sleep with magnets and wake up energized."  Another article entitled, "Magnetic Bra Prevents Cancer."  The article begins, "An amazing magnetic bra is attracting the attention of cancer doctors who find it an effective alternative for shrinking, preventing and sometimes curing deadly lumps in women's breasts."

The most recent article in my file is from People's magazine, March 9, 1998 with an article entitled, "Magnet Magnate."  Subtitle, "Skeptics abound, but former golf pro Lisanne DiNapoi's wearable medicine attracts top athletes." The article goes on to say that for athletes, an injury can cancel a career.  But for Lisanne DiNapoli, it worked the other way around.  After the Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., golf pro pinched a nerve in her back in 1993, her physical therapist gave her a magnet pad -- a treatment common in Japan and Europe -- to wear on the sore spot.  "After one day I was 99 percent better," says DiNapoli, now 29.   "Everybody knew I was using a magnet.  They thought I was nuts."   Other articles, "Magnet fan Chi Chi Rodriguez first used them (magnets) for neck pain."  "Speed Skater Bonnie Blair (in New York City in 1994) also uses polar power."

Actually Biomagnetism, and the biological use of magnetism, to aid and treat human and /or animal ills, is far older than the ancient science of acupuncture.  Dr. Hua To, one of China's most advanced medical men, born between A.D. 140 and 150, was the developer of acupuncture.  Magnetism or magnets were used in medicine by the Greek physician Galen.  We find that in Galen's ninth book entitled, "De Simplicium Medicamentorum", mention is made to a magnet's energies being used in purgative arrest and openings.  This writing can be dated as far back as 200 B.C. -- far  older than the recorded science of acupuncture.

For our purposes here let me share with the reader some of the uses of magnets using the north (-) ie. negative pole and the south (+) ie. positive pole.  This will allow you, the reader, some latitude to experiment with magnets and prove to yourself the benefits of magnetic therapy.  You must use bipolar magnets, meaning that one side of the magnet is positive and the opposite side is negative.  Some magnets are unipolar meaning that each surface has both positive and negative energy.  Two unipolar magnets will attract or "stick" together using either surface.  Bipolar magnets will attract or "stick" together when the positive and negative surfaces approximate each other and will repel or push away when two negatives or two positives approximate each other.  One then needs to know which surface of the bipolar magnet is positive and which is negative.  You can check this for yourself if you have a compass.  Set a compass on a table or other flat surface and hold your magnet vertical so one flat side is facing the compass.  Start a couple feet away and slowly move the magnet towards the compass.  If the compass needle flips around and points to your magnet that will be the north pole or positive side of the magnet.  Turn the magnet over with the opposite flat surface facing the compass and the needle should flip around and point away from the magnet indicating the south or positive side of the magnet is now facing the compass.  Mark you magnet (N) and (S) or (-) and (+).  We have always used the color red for positive and green for negative ......... whatever works for you.  It is also important to know the gauss strength or energy of the magnet.   Gauss is a little more complex than I care to discuss here so for simplicity lets just say the gauss determines the width and depth of the energy field of the magnet and thus the depth of penetration into the tissue or organ area of the body.  This is not entirely true but for our purposes here lets leave it at that.  We used 1200 to 1800 gauss magnets about the size of a quarter and made of ceramic material.  These were the most economical and basically do not loose there energy over a long period of time.   Your "refrigerator" magnets might be 200, possibly 400 gauss.  This will give you an idea of gauss strength or energy.  VHG or (Very High Gauss) magnetic energy  in the range of 20,000 to 100,000 and even higher have been used to arrest many diseases such as all forms of cancer and other difficult complaints, using the NEGATIVE side only of the magnet.

The North pole energies reduce inflamed conditions, sedates spastic muscles, flushes excess tissue fluid or edema, relieve pressure from swollen infected, or inflamed membrane coverings, and arrest and shrink growths.  The negative or north pole is then the sedative energy field.  The Positive or South pole is then the activator or acts to stimulate.  The south pole expands, brings fluid into an area, activates weakened muscles and promotes growth activity.   With this in mind one can make an intelligent choice as to which side of the magnet to use for what.  A good rule of thumb is, if it is helping continue using it, if it is not or it seems to worsen the situation use the opposite side and evaluate the outcome or cease using the magnet entirely.   Sometimes one pole works for a while and then it switches to the opposite pole.   We found that we used the negative pole far more than the positive pole. For example, because the negative pole acts to reduce swelling and lessen pain we applied the negative pole to all sprained backs, ankles, hip and leg muscles and shoulder sprains etc..  The magnet can be taped on and left for days or applied for 30 minute twice a day especially if the gauss is 3000 or more.  Sore throats respond to the negative pole.  Keep the magnet up high on the throat and not down by the episternal notch as the thymus gland is behind this part of the sternum/neck and would be much more satisfied with the positive side of the magnet.   When both positive and negative are used in an upper respiratory infection, for example, the positive over the thymus (behind the upper sternum) should be used first and then the negative over the throat, sinuses or chest is use last.

Obviously we could go on and on with the therapeutic use of the magnet and for anyone interested in all the treatment methods I would recommend the Davis/Rawls book, "The Magnetic Effect."  Somehow I always get around to Dr. Wallachs minerals and because magnetism has an effect on the electrolytes and pH of the tissue we should keep our body electrically balanced with 100% all organic colloidal minerals.   The Rockland Mines is the only source  http://healthalternative.org/mineral.htm  and Dr. Wallach's products are the only products sold under network marketing using Rockland's minerals. http://healthalternative.org/printabl.htm

We are about to move to North Carolina.  Our website will not reflect this change, at least not at first.  It has, however, slowed us down on keeping up with a weekly newsletter.  It may be imperative to go to one twice a month or bimonthly as one would intellectually say.  Its been fun and we do enjoy sharing information.    Until next time .......... when we meet again on Health Chat .............. Take care and God Bless
